Small Oil on Canvas

I only started to experiment with small canvases out of necessity—my studio space was in transition and I simply didn't have room to paint on anything bigger than about a foot squared—but when I began painting small, I found that it opened a door for me.
Painting on small canvases has since become one of the joys of my art practice. It allows me to expand the creative process and make room for images that might otherwise be scrutinized and treated too preciously, given the time and effort needed to translate any image from idea to finished work. While I still put a great deal of care and attention to these small canvases, they may take anywhere from five to ten hours to create, in contrast to the hundreds of hours over the course of months that the larger paintings sometimes demand.
Another major benefit for me is that creating small works allows me to fairly set a more affordable price point for my art while still honouring my time and effort.
